Richard Lee Buangan — American diplomat,
The tradition of worshiping the morning sun on New Year's Day is an ancient custom of the Mongolian people, during which people bow to the sky at sunrise, offering milk, alcohol, and tea, as well as sprinkling the sky with these drinks.

This ritual symbolizes luck and positive emotions in the new year, and the first sight of the sun determines the color of the year and embodies the light of the coming time, making it a significant part of the spring celebrations.

“It is a great honor for me to participate in this centuries-old tradition and to welcome the first sunrise of 2026. I hope it brings blessings and good fortune in the new year. Happy New Year, my dear friends, family, and colleagues in Mongolia and the USA!” — shared his impressions Ambassador Richard L. Buangan on his social media page.

Richard Lee Buangan, who became the U.S. Ambassador to Mongolia in November 2022, was born in San Diego to a Filipino-American family and earned a bachelor's degree in political science and economics from St. Edward's University.
