A court in the Netherlands has ruled the marriage, concluded on April 19, 2025, invalid due to errors in the text of the wedding ceremony, which was composed using ChatGPT. According to NOS, the ceremony was conducted by a friend of the newlyweds.

In the prepared text, informal expressions and humorous phrases were used, including a question about the readiness to support each other and "stick together, even when times are tough." However, the speech lacked the mandatory legal clause regarding mutual recognition as spouses, which is necessary for the legal formalization of marriage.

According to Dutch law, the absence of this clause renders the marriage invalid. Consequently, the prosecution filed a petition to annul the marriage certificate.

The spouses attempted to appeal the decision, pointing out that an official registrar was present at the ceremony, heard the text, and did not intervene. However, the court did not consider this argument and upheld the prosecution's position.

As a result, the court ruled to annul the marriage, and the spouses will have to go through the registration process again to regain their legal status.
