EASA stated in its announcement that this recommendation is due to the "high risk for civil flights" operating over Iran. The agency noted that against the backdrop of current events and potential military actions by the United States, Iranian air defense forces are on heightened alert.

EASA emphasized that there is a significant likelihood of misidentification of aerial targets in Iranian airspace. Furthermore, the presence of various weapons and air defense systems, along with Iran's unpredictable reactions and potential use of air defense, pose serious risks to civil aviation.

The agency also expressed concern that in the event of a possible U.S. invasion of Iran, the Islamic Republic may take retaliatory measures against American facilities in the region. This, according to EASA, could increase risks for the airspace of neighboring countries where U.S. bases are located.

Earlier, the Al Hadath channel reported that Iranian authorities decided to close the airspace at the border with Iraq, which raised speculations about a possible airstrike by the U.S., according to information from DW and the dpa agency. The White House spokesperson added that "only President Trump is aware of his intentions," and only a limited number of advisors are aware of his plans.

At the same time, the Ukrainian embassy in Iran announced a temporary suspension of its operations due to the escalation of the security situation, while the diplomatic mission promised to inform about the resumption of activities later.

DW also reminds that protests in Iran began in late December 2025. Initially, they were triggered by a severe economic situation, but later the protesters started to raise political demands, including calls for the overthrow of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

As a result, protests in various cities escalated into riots. According to the U.S.-based human rights organization HRANA, at least 544 people have died during the ongoing protests, and more than 10,600 have been detained.
