The training center for search dogs of the Main Customs Administration at Chinggis Khaan International Airport operates tirelessly. This was reported by MiddleAsianNews.
Established in 1993, this training center currently has 53 dogs; six of them work at the international airport, helping to protect Mongolia's borders by checking passenger luggage and detecting narcotic and psychotropic substances.
According to Naranbadrah Boldbaatar, the head of the center, service dogs such as Malinois, German Shepherds, and Labrador Retrievers are crucial for security at the air border. He reported that these dogs detect 30 to 40% of all drugs and psychotropic substances found at the airport. Additionally, he noted that Malinois can distinguish up to 7,000 different scents, making their sense of smell significantly more sensitive than that of humans.
The center's team also emphasizes the importance of updating the population: the average lifespan of a search dog is about 12 years, and the active working period is approximately 8 years. With the growing number of international flights, customs services need to increase the number of dogs to ensure round-the-clock monitoring.
Baasandorj Gankhuu, the head of customs at Chinggis Khaan Airport, suggested including service dogs in breeding programs to increase their numbers. He noted that using pairs of dogs for inspections would speed up the process and enhance efficiency.
The head of the city council and chairman of the Capital Crime Prevention Coordination Sub-Council, Bayar Aarbayasgalan, stated that this year, the priority for the crime prevention group will be combating drug trafficking. He noted that, relying on successful programs from the Republic of Korea for breeding search dogs, the authorities plan to cooperate with relevant organizations to improve the quality of search dogs in Mongolia and prevent the import of drugs into Ulaanbaatar.
