At the recent meeting of the Basin Council in Naryn, experts and representatives of government bodies discussed the strategy for managing the region's water resources. The main topic of the meeting was the application of the basin management principle, enshrined in the Water Code of the Kyrgyz Republic, which considers the river as a single entity, regardless of administrative boundaries.
This approach allows for the use, conservation, and protection of water resources according to natural drainage systems, which, in turn, helps to avoid conflicts of interest among various water users in the Naryn River basin. Meeting participants thoroughly examined current issues related to resource use and the development of water infrastructure.
The council members also emphasized the impact of climate change. Experts noted that global warming has a significant effect on the economy and daily life of people, necessitating urgent adaptation of irrigation and water use methods. The Basin Council, which includes government bodies, local authorities, and public organizations, reaffirmed its role as a key platform for coordinating these processes.
The council, which operates on a voluntary basis, meets at least once a year to make strategic decisions. The results of the meeting in Naryn once again highlighted that effective water resource management is not only a technical task but also a necessary condition for the sustainable development of the country, requiring collective responsibility from the entire society.
