Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, has instructed to consider the possibility of halting gas supplies to Europe, which may prove to be more beneficial for the country. He noted that it might be more sensible for the Russian Federation to stop supplies rather than wait for European countries to completely abandon Russian gas, which is expected by 2027. Putin made this statement in an interview with journalist Pavel Zarubin.

According to the president, "in a month, restrictions on the purchase of Russian gas, including liquefied gas, are planned to be introduced, and by 2027, its import will be completely banned." In this regard, Putin poses the question: "Maybe we should preemptively stop supplies to Europe and focus on new, emerging markets?"

He emphasized that there is "no political agenda" behind his proposal. Putin added that if the closure of markets is inevitable, it is better to "stop supplies ourselves and turn to reliable partners."

“This is not a final decision; rather, it is a reflection out loud. I will ask the government to work on this issue together with our companies,” the Russian leader noted.

It was previously reported that the EU countries had agreed to completely abandon Russian gas by 2027, while Slovakia and Hungary opposed this decision, continuing to receive gas through the "Turkish Stream."

Data from the European gas transport group Entsog shows that pipeline gas exports from Russia to Europe decreased by 44% in 2025, amounting to 18 billion cubic meters.

At the same time, due to Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, gas prices on European exchanges exceeded $700 for the first time since the beginning of 2023.

It is also worth noting that after the attacks from Iran, Qatar suspended liquefied natural gas production at its largest plant. It was previously reported that QatarEnergy halted LNG production after strikes on facilities in Ras Laffan and Mesaieed, affecting operational production capacities. QatarEnergy is a leading global producer of LNG, accounting for nearly 20% of the world's total volumes.
