During the online presentation of the analytical report "Energy of Central Asia: Modernization and Energy Transition," the head of the Sectoral Analysis Center of the Eurasian Development Bank, Arman Akhunbaev, stated: "Low prices for renewable energy sources (RES) do not guarantee that the final cost of energy will be low, and that the energy system will be sustainable."

He added that we are in a new era of energy, where the question of the feasibility of building RES is no longer relevant. Since 2015, the cost of solar power plants has decreased by 70%, and wind power plants by 55%. Now it is important to determine how to integrate RES into existing energy systems so that they remain reliable and efficient. At the same time, the authors of the report point out that the growth in energy demand is outpacing the deployment of RES.

"There is a question of whether there are enough system capacities to meet the new wave of demand without shortages and restrictions. Central Asia is also subject to this global trend of increasing consumption amid existing capacity constraints. For the region, it is important not only to introduce new RES but also to ensure the availability of networks, reserves, storage, and generation flexibility, as well as interstate coordination. Otherwise, even the cheapest energy sources can create risks," emphasized Akhunbaev.

According to the Eurasian Development Bank, Central Asia is undergoing significant changes: outdated management methods in the industry are failing to meet modern challenges. It is expected that by 2030, electricity consumption in the region will increase by 40%, while 70% of the infrastructure is already worn out.
