The poverty level in Kyrgyzstan remains at around 25% — Edil Baisalov

He reported that during the pandemic, the poverty level reached 30%

At a meeting of parliamentary groups of the Jogorku Kenesh, Deputy Prime Minister Edil Baisalov stated that the current poverty level in Kyrgyzstan is approximately 25%.

According to him, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the poverty level in the country increased to nearly 30%. In the middle of last year, statistics showed that the poverty level was at 25.7%, and it currently remains close to that mark.

Baisalov explained that the category of poor in Kyrgyzstan includes citizens with an annual income of less than 65,417 soms, which characterizes monetary poverty.

“Poverty is growing rapidly, while its reduction is happening slowly. Even with all the government's efforts, the decrease is only 2-3 percent,” he noted.

The Deputy Prime Minister also pointed to the existence of multidimensional poverty, which includes not only income but also access to education, healthcare, housing, and basic services.

He emphasized that, according to UN data, more than 1 billion people in the world live in conditions of multidimensional poverty. This issue was discussed at the recent World Bank global summit in Doha, dedicated to social issues.

Baisalov added that the problem of poverty remains one of the key issues, and the cabinet of ministers will work to reduce it to 15%.
