The First Results of the Transition to the 12-Year Model: Teachers Are Not Ready for Six-Year-Old Children
Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Abakir Mamytov emphasized that in Kyrgyzstan, teachers lacked experience working with six-year-old children, as they had previously been cared for by kindergarten educators. This led to significant difficulties when six-year-old children were first enrolled in the first grade.
Bryzgalova noted that in September, children who were not ready for the educational process arrived at educational institutions and might not even possess basic social skills.
“When enrolling children in schools this year, the Ministry of Education encountered a situation where many six-year-old first-graders lacked elementary social skills, which became a real challenge for them. In classrooms, the number of students reached 25, and in urban schools, up to 50. Teachers had to make tremendous efforts to help children adapt to the new school system. These children entered school for the first time and immediately found themselves in a second-grade environment,” she said.
She added that parents did not provide information about their children's preparedness.
“Despite our requests and recommendations to inform whether the child had undergone preparation in preschool institutions or educational centers, many parents approached this skeptically. As a result, children who were not ready for the educational materials intended for this level in the 12-year system came to the second grade. The programs for the 1st and 2nd grades of the 12-year education differ from the previous ones, and this created significant challenges that educators had to face during the first academic quarter. Teachers and the entire teaching staff had to reconsider their working methods,” Bryzgalova added.
