In 2025, 33,998 cases of measles were registered in the countries of the region, which is 75% less than in 2024. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF point out that the virus is still active, and the low vaccination rate creates conditions for new outbreaks.

According to the two organizations, the decrease in the number of cases is linked to outbreak response measures, including additional immunization campaigns, as well as a reduction in the number of people susceptible to infection after the virus spread in under-vaccinated groups.

Despite the positive changes, the statistics for 2025 still exceed the levels of most years since 2000, and in some countries, the number of cases has even increased compared to 2024. Measles cases continue to be recorded in 2026 as well.

Regina De Dominicis, UNICEF Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia, noted that the factors contributing to the return of this dangerous infection are still relevant. She emphasized that as long as all children are not vaccinated and misinformation is not overcome, the risk of serious illness and fatalities will remain high.

Hans Henri P. Kluge, head of the WHO Regional Office for Europe, reminded that over the past three years, more than 200,000 people have contracted measles. He emphasized that to stop the spread of the virus, a 95% vaccination coverage in every community is necessary, gaps in immunity must be addressed, and epidemiological monitoring must be strengthened.

According to data from the European Regional Verification Commission for Measles and Rubella Elimination, the number of countries with stable or newly emerged endemic transmission of measles has increased to 19, marking the most serious setback in the fight against this infection in recent years.

WHO and UNICEF emphasize that they continue joint efforts with governments and international partners to strengthen vaccination programs, train healthcare workers, and conduct additional immunization campaigns.
