Who Should Consider PrEP
This prophylaxis is recommended for the following categories of people at increased risk of HIV infection:- those who have difficulty consistently using condoms and have non-monogamous sexual partners;
- people with multiple sexual partners;
- members of vulnerable populations;
- those whose sexual partners are HIV-positive, especially if their viral load is unknown or uncontrolled.
How to Obtain PrEP in Kyrgyzstan
The process of obtaining it is significantly simplified and does not take much time:- The first step is to seek help. You can contact any republican, regional, or city center for the control of bloodborne viral hepatitis and HIV, as well as an infectious disease specialist at the Family Medicine Center or the General Practice Center in your area, or non-profit organizations engaged in HIV prevention.
- Testing. You need to take a free rapid HIV test (PrEP can only be prescribed if the result is negative).
- Consultation. The doctor will suggest a convenient regimen (daily or as needed for certain groups of people).
- Receiving medications. The drugs are provided free of charge.
- the service is available for free and confidentially in all regions of the country;
- PrEP does not replace condoms, which still protect against most sexually transmitted infections and prevent unwanted pregnancies;
- the medications for PrEP cannot cause HIV and are safe to take under medical supervision;
- regular HIV testing is a mandatory part of the PrEP program.
The Importance of PrEP for Kyrgyzstan
The use of pre-exposure prophylaxis is part of a global strategy to reduce the number of new HIV cases and achieve public health goals. Increasing access to PrEP helps:- reduce the number of new HIV infections;
- encourage early medical help-seeking behavior;
- reduce stigma and discrimination;
- ensure the overall health of the population.
