Starting from March 1, new rules regarding the dismissal of foreign workers will come into effect in Russia. Now, employers will be able to terminate employment contracts with migrants in the event of regional restrictions on the attraction of foreign labor.

Previously, according to the Labor Code of the Russian Federation, the dismissal of foreigners was only possible in the presence of federal-level restrictions. Now, decisions made by local authorities will also be added to this basis.

Today, a federal law "On Amendments to Article 327.6 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation" has come into effect.

In the explanatory note, it is indicated that in 2025 such prohibitions were in place, for example, in the Moscow region, Krasnodar Krai, as well as in Novgorod and Nizhny Novgorod regions, where local regulations restricted the employment of foreigners working under patents in certain sectors.

Employers risked facing fines of up to 1 million rubles or suspension of their activities if they did not comply with these restrictions. Furthermore, the dismissal of migrants under such conditions could be deemed illegal with corresponding legal consequences. The amendments made eliminate this gap, as emphasized in the document.

It should also be noted that since 2024, 22 federal laws aimed at tightening migration policy have been adopted in Russia.
