Deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh Elvira Surabaldiyeva stressed that media is an important tool for building trust in society and establishing dialogue between citizens and the state. These words were spoken at the Media Talk "Reconsidering the Role of Media in Kyrgyzstan," which took place on March 27 in Bishkek and was organized by the Media Action Platform of Kyrgyzstan as part of the CARAVAN project, with the support of the European Union.

“The quality of media affects the level of trust in society,” — Deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh Elvira Surabaldiyeva

According to Surabaldiyeva, the modern media sector requires much more than just the dissemination of news.

She noted that there is a significant transformation of the media landscape in Kyrgyzstan, with changes in technologies, work formats, and funding sources, as well as updates to the legislative framework, including a new media law.

The deputy emphasized the increasing role of professional journalism in the context of global changes.

“Professional journalists are those who can convey information accurately and meaningfully while remaining a reliable source for the public,” she stated.

Surabaldiyeva also pointed out the importance of not only the law itself but also its actual implementation.

“The implementation of the law must take into account the interests of both society and professional journalists,” she added.

Continuing the discussion on trust, Surabaldiyeva noted the importance of journalism as a connecting link. She emphasized that media serves as a channel for communication between the state, business, and citizens, including migrants, for whom access to reliable information is critically important.

In a broader context, in her opinion, the media landscape is becoming part of the national security system, which requires attention to issues of combating disinformation, ensuring public stability, and adhering to international standards of freedom of speech.

Thus, Surabaldiyeva believes that the development of the media sector should be balanced, taking into account both security issues and the need to maintain independent and professional journalism.

She highlighted among the main areas of work the development of regional media, support for quality journalism, including investigative journalism, as well as the sustainability of media organizations.

“It is crucial that all decisions are made based on dialogue, professional expertise, and mutual respect,” concluded the deputy.
