Photo Reuters. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte supported Emmanuel Macron's initiative for dialogue with Russia
At a press conference, Mark Rutte noted: “I will support any initiative that can contribute to the swift end of this terrible war. The American president has made a significant contribution to resolving the current situation. I am confident that any steps leading to the end of the conflict should be supported.”
He added that each NATO country has the right to act as France does, but only in coordination with Alliance partners.
Later, during a meeting of ministers, the NATO Secretary General made another important statement, calling the United States “the largest country in the world.”
“The USA is the most powerful country on the planet,” he explained, responding to a question about why the American Secretary of Defense was absent from the meeting.
Rutte also emphasized that “the States should pay attention to other regions of the world.”
Earlier, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot raised the issue that European countries providing assistance to Ukraine should have their own direct communication channel with Russia to protect their interests, without relying on others.
Additionally, the governments of European countries expressed the need to appoint a special representative for negotiations with Russia.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also confirmed that Europe should start a dialogue with Russia. She noted that European leaders should develop a coordinated position and begin negotiations not only with Kyiv but also with Moscow.
Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also called on Western countries for dialogue with Russian authorities to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
