Life in the Regions: A Student from Kadamzhai Earns Money from Syrian Hamsters
According to him, the winter period is considered the most challenging time for breeding hamsters, which is why their price increases during this time.
“I am currently studying in my first year in the city of Osh. I take the hamsters with me and keep them close. My sister also breeds them separately. Many people do not sell hamsters in winter because it is difficult to breed them. The price during this season reaches 450–500 soms for one hamster. In spring, summer, and autumn, they are cheaper because hamsters grow quickly and breed actively,” Akmatjanov said.
He mentioned that the hamsters he and his sister breed belong to the Syrian species.
“They are relatively large, with an average length of 15–18 centimeters. Syrian hamsters prefer to live alone. Compared to other species, they adapt to humans more quickly and have a calm temperament. They live for 3–5 years. In domestic conditions with good care, they can live 4–5 years, but if kept outdoors, only 2–3 years. A hamster can become a good friend for children who are often alone: it helps distract from loneliness and gets along easily with kids.
Hamsters are easy to keep at home and require less expense compared to dogs or cats. Despite the variety of beautiful colors, the price does not depend on the color. They mainly feed on special food made from seeds, barley, and wheat. You can also give them small amounts of vegetables—carrots and cucumbers,” Iskhak said.
Reference
The Syrian or Golden hamster is a rodent of the hamster family, found in the vicinity of the Syrian city of Aleppo, as well as in eastern Turkey. It is a popular companion animal. They are covered with soft, dense fur of golden, white, black, silver, or brown colors. Their body length is 13-15 centimeters, with about 1.5 centimeters being the tail. Their weight can reach 100–300 grams. They are nocturnal. Syrian hamsters are very active and gentle creatures, ready to calmly enjoy the warmth of their owner's hands without showing a hint of aggression. These little animals hardly bite.
