UN Secretary-General calls strikes on Iran and Tehran's retaliatory attacks a threat to international peace

UN Secretary-General António Guterres spoke at an emergency meeting of the Security Council, emphasizing the need to take all possible measures to prevent further escalation and to bring the region back from the "brink of disaster." Guterres urged all parties involved to return to negotiations, noting that military actions occurred amid diplomatic efforts between the US and Iran, mediated by Oman.

Disagreements arose among the members of the Security Council. Russia described the attacks as "a new act of baseless armed aggression" against a sovereign state, which it views as "a betrayal of diplomatic efforts."

China condemned these actions as "unabashed," expressed condolences for the loss of civilian lives, and called for respect for Iran's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Iran, in turn, characterized the events as a war crime and a crime against humanity, stating that the US and Israel deliberately attacked civilian areas in major cities.

The US responded by claiming that the strikes were aimed at destroying Iran's ballistic capabilities and preventing its nuclear program.

Israel explained its actions as necessary, pointing to an "existential threat" posed by Iran, which ignores international norms.

The UK, which is chairing the Council in February, called for a swift resolution to the conflict and reported the involvement of its forces in "coordinated regional defensive operations."

France demanded that Iran adhere to international obligations, pointing to Tehran's withdrawal from cooperation with the IAEA.
