The war from the Middle East has spread to the CIS. Baku accused Tehran of a drone attack

The Iranian ambassador was summoned to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry

Recent attacks by Iranian drones on the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, an exclave of Azerbaijan, have provoked a sharp reaction from Baku. According to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, one drone hit the airport terminal building, while another landed near a school in the village of Shakerabad. As a result of the incident, two people were injured, as reported by DW.

In response to the incident, the Iranian ambassador in Baku, Mojtaba Demirchilu, was summoned to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry. The announcement of the summons was made on Thursday, March 5.

Azerbaijani authorities expressed their protest, pointing to a "violation of norms and principles of international law," which leads to increased tension in the region. The Foreign Ministry emphasized that they demand Iran to immediately provide explanations, conduct an investigation, and take measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. It was also noted that Azerbaijan reserves the right to take retaliatory actions.

According to information from the Minval publication, the attacking drones are identified as Shahed-136. In videos taken by eyewitnesses, columns of black smoke can be seen rising above the airport.

Nakhchivan International Airport is located just 10 kilometers from the Iranian border.

It is worth noting that on February 28, the United States and Israel began airstrikes on Iranian territory. U.S. President Donald Trump announced his intention to destroy the nuclear program of the Islamic Republic, urging Iranian military personnel to lay down their arms and citizens to take their fate into their own hands.

According to Iranian state media, more than 1,000 people were killed as a result of the strikes, which was confirmed on March 4. Among the dead was Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several high-ranking military officials. Iran responded to the attacks by striking Israel and several Gulf countries, where casualties were also reported. Tehran claims that it is not at war with Arab states but is attacking American military bases in the region. On March 4, there were also reports of a missile being intercepted that was heading from Iran towards Turkey.
