According to Michael Nichols, Vice President of SpaceX, Starlink satellites will be moved to a new altitude in 2026 — 480 kilometers, which is lower than the current 550 kilometers. This decision is aimed at improving safety in space.

Nichols noted that this orbital reorientation will reduce the likelihood of collisions. "Lowering the altitude of the satellites will lead to a denser Starlink orbit and improve safety in space. At altitudes below 500 kilometers, there is less space debris and fewer planned satellite constellations, which reduces the risk of collisions," he wrote on social media platform Twitter (X).

This decision was a result of an incident in December when one of the Starlink satellites exhibited anomalies and lost communication at an altitude of 418 kilometers. As a result, the spacecraft sharply lowered its altitude by 4 kilometers, which may indicate a possible explosion on board, according to experts.

SpaceX holds a leading position among satellite internet operators and has nearly 10,000 satellites, providing broadband internet access worldwide.
