Potanin Glacier will now be called Khuiten Glacier
At a meeting held on December 24, the government approved the renaming of several geographical objects in the Bayan-Ölgii and Sukhbaatar aimags, restoring their historical Mongolian names.

In particular, it was decided to eliminate names of places and water bodies that were given in other languages, such as Russian, Kazakh, and Tuvan.

In collaboration with the Main Administration of Land Use, Geodesy, and Cartography, the Academy of Sciences, and the National Language Policy Council, a field survey was conducted in 2023, during which 319 locations with names differing from traditional Mongolian were identified. For example, Potanin Glacier is now called Khuiten Glacier (which means "cold"), Jolt Mountain is now Yolt-Uul Mountain (mountain of the bearded vulture), and Chikhachev Ridge is now Siilkhem Ridge (which translates as "notched").

The study also established the names of 47 mountains and hills in the Altai Mountains of Mongolia that have unofficial names in the Bayan-Ölgii aimag.

Additionally, from 2021 to 2022, a database of geographical names was created for 13 soums of the Sukhbaatar aimag.

According to Article 8, Section 1 of the Constitution, "the Mongolian language is the official language of the state," and Article 6.1.7 of the Law on the Mongolian Language states that "the names and addresses of territories, administrative units, streets, roads, squares, and legal entities" must be in the Mongolian language.
