In the Kyrgyz Republic, a program to increase the areas for winter crops is actively being implemented. This was reported on the air by Turatbek Idrisov, who holds the position of head of the department for the implementation of decisions in the field of crop production and horticulture at the Ministry of Agriculture.

According to Idrisov, work on winter crops was initiated last year. "This is necessary, as we currently cannot fully provide ourselves with food wheat," he noted.

The representative of the Ministry of Agriculture explained that the transition to winter varieties of wheat and barley will increase yields. This, in turn, will allow farmers to increase the volume of produced goods and their incomes. Additionally, the growth of winter crop production will contribute to strengthening the country's food security.

Idrisov added that after the completion of the autumn harvest, farmers have a more favorable period for the sowing campaign. During this time, equipment, seeds, and fertilizers are used less intensively than in spring. "Therefore, we actively encourage farmers to switch to winter sowing," he emphasized.

For the harvest of 2025-2026, 162 thousand hectares of winter crops have already been sown in the republic, of which 152 thousand hectares are wheat and 9 thousand hectares are barley.
Among the total area, 63 thousand hectares are sown on irrigated lands, while 83-86 thousand hectares are on non-irrigated lands.

"Winter crops are cultivated in six regions of the country, except for the Naryn region. The largest number of sowings is observed in the Chui region — over 40%. Following are the Issyk-Kul, Jalal-Abad, Osh, and Batken regions," Idrisov added.
