Every year, approximately as many male chicks are destroyed worldwide as there are people on the planet

Every year, around 7 billion male chicks are destroyed worldwide, which corresponds to the planet's population.

According to the latest data, by 2015 this number was 7 billion and is likely higher now.

Male chicks are killed shortly after their sex is determined, which happens just a few days after hatching, as they do not lay eggs, and only hens involved in breeding (not broilers) can fertilize them.
Some countries, such as Germany, France, and Italy, have already enacted laws prohibiting this practice.

In the United States, about 9 billion broiler chicks are hatched each year (globally, this is approximately 65 billion). Almost all of them are turned into meat, except for those that do not survive to slaughter. Every day in the U.S., around 25 million chickens die. Suppliers usually report the total weight, which varies from live weight to carcass weight determined after slaughter when inedible parts such as heads and internal organs are removed.

Meanwhile…

Every day, over 150 million land animals are killed for food worldwide, resulting in the death of 56 billion animals each year. When considering fish caught in the wild and farmed, this number reaches about 3 billion killed animals daily.

In the U.S., 9 billion chicks are hatched each year, intended to grow to the necessary size for human consumption. Animal suffering is the most direct consequence of meat consumption, along with unintended consequences.

Every year, between 37 and 120 billion fish die on commercial farms, and another 2.7 trillion are caught and perish in the wild. On fish farms, fish have virtually no protection.
