- As of January 16, 2026, the situation in the sewing industry of Kyrgyzstan raises serious concerns. This was stated by Elizaveta Alymbaeva, chairwoman of the Central Committee of the Trade Union of Workers in Trade, Public Catering, and Other Forms of Entrepreneurship, during a meeting of the "Ala-Too" deputy group.

She noted that there is a mass closure of sewing enterprises in the country, which negatively impacts both the level of employment for citizens and tax revenues to the republic's budget. According to Alymbaeva, the industry could significantly strengthen the economy with proper government support.

“The sewing business in Kyrgyzstan emerged almost entirely through the efforts of the citizens themselves, without active participation from the state. Currently, enterprises are forced to import all necessary fittings and textiles, mainly from Uzbekistan, where their own production is already organized. The country even lacks basic production of goods such as needles and buttons, highlighting the weak development of related industries. We see that government support for domestic producers is clearly insufficient, while the sewing industry desperately needs assistance,” she emphasized.

In this regard, the union chairwoman drew attention to the active support of the agro-industrial complex by the state and questioned why similar measures are not applied to the sewing industry, which also has high potential for economic growth and job creation.
