“Look at the wonderful park they promised to create at the site of the Naryn restaurant”
Vlad Ushakov, a well-known public figure and eco-activist, expressed his dissatisfaction with the actions of the Bishkek city hall regarding the greening of the city. He shared his thoughts on social media.
“When representatives of the city hall promise 'on camera' that a new city park will be created at the site of the Osh market, I don’t quite believe them. Look at that wonderful park they promised and actually established at the site of the demolished Naryn restaurant in Victory Square. And how beautifully the green recreation area has been arranged at the site of the demolished garages in Microdistrict 11. I cannot fail to mention the magnificent green area that was promised and created at the site of the former prosecutor's office in Ala-Too Square, as well as the Korean Times Square near the Central Department Store, and the new plantings in the botanical garden... It seems to me that every year the shady alleys of Bishkek become greener,” he noted.
The public is generally skeptical about the modernization of urban parks, such as the Botanical Garden and Atatürk Park, where trees and shrubs are being cut down to create running tracks and other facilities. However, there are also supporters of the city hall's actions who believe that the creation of social recreation facilities is more relevant for the constantly growing population of the city.
It is worth reminding that this year the Osh market will be relocated outside the city. The authorities have already held a meeting with traders to discuss issues related to the move. It is still unclear what exactly will be at the site of the current market, but one of the promises made to the public is the creation of a park area.
