In the context of climate change, Kyrgyzstan is actively developing yak breeding, which is considered one of the most promising areas in agriculture. This was reported by the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry of the Republic.

According to official data, the total yak population in the country is 61,650 heads. The main regions where they are concentrated include Naryn, Issyk-Kul, and Osh oblasts, where high pastures create optimal ecological conditions for these animals.

Yaks, which are on pastures year-round, demonstrate high resilience to extreme weather conditions, including frosts of up to -40 °C. They are used not only for meat and milk production but also for wool, providing stable productivity even in high-altitude conditions.

The Ministry emphasizes that in the context of climate change and pasture degradation, yak breeding becomes particularly relevant. These animals are capable of not only surviving but also successfully reproducing at altitudes from 2,000 to 4,500 meters above sea level, in areas where ordinary livestock cannot exist.

Given their ability to adapt to cold, drought, and poor forage lands, yak breeding is seen as an effective solution for regions experiencing climate change. It also helps reduce the burden on lowland pastures by utilizing remote high-altitude areas.

Currently, scientists from the National Academy of Sciences, together with the Kyrgyz Research Institute of Animal Husbandry and Pastures, are working on the selection of white yaks. The project is being implemented at the "Zhaychy" farm named after T. Akmatov in the Ton district and aims to study and recognize white yaks as a separate breed group.

Since 2003, farmers Baatyrbek Akmatov from the Ton district and Tashtanbek Akmatov from the Naryn region have also been engaged in the selection of white yaks. Their efforts have already yielded results: at the "Agrodialog-2025" forum, Baatyrbek Akmatov was awarded the title of champion in white yak breeding.

The Ministry has announced its intention to continue work on developing yak breeding, providing scientific support for breeding programs, and assisting farmers in this area.
