Among the 75 signatories of the appeal are scholars, former prime ministers, former deputies, and representatives of the public, who emphasize that the current president was elected in 2021 under the provisions of the old Constitution. After its amendment in April 2021, legal disagreements arose regarding the presidential term.
The letter notes that with the introduction of the new Constitution, uncertainties emerged in the interpretation of the terms of the current president, who was elected before it came into effect. The signatories highlighted two main opinions among lawyers and political figures:
- the first — the necessity of holding early elections as the only correct solution,
- the second — waiting for the completion of the established six-year term.
The authors of the appeal are confident that organizing elections in the near future "will help avoid various interpretations, additional clarifications, public disputes, and potential appeals to the Constitutional Court."
In their letter, they also highlight the key achievements of the current authorities, including addressing issues related to state borders, combating corruption, strengthening the armed forces, and positive changes in the social sphere. However, they also point out shortcomings that require urgent response: increasing public debt, rising prices, and the migration of the indigenous population.
As of now, the presidential administration has not provided comments regarding the appeal for early elections.
