On February 18, it became known about the appointment of Janar Akayev as the mayor of Osh. This decision was made by the President of Kyrgyzstan, and he succeeded Jenishbek Toktorbaev, who resigned. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Adylbek Kasymaliev and former mayor Toktorbaev, despite rumors of his possible resignation.

Kaktus.media invites us to recall the career of Janar Akayev, who has been involved in politics for over ten years in various government structures.

Biography

Janarbek Kubanychovich Akayev was born on December 13, 1986, in the village of Kabylaan-Kol, located in the Osh region.

He received higher education in "journalism" at Osh State University in 2009 and completed his studies at the Kyrgyz State Law University in "jurisprudence" in 2018.

Work Activity

From 2008 to 2014, Akayev worked as a correspondent for "Radio Azattyk".

From February to March 2015, he served as the press secretary for President Almazbek Atambayev.

In the autumn of 2015, he was elected as a deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh of the VI convocation from the SDPK and soon became the deputy chairman of the committee on social issues and health care.

In 2021, he was elected as a deputy of the VII convocation from the "Alliance" party. Since 2022, he has headed the committee on international affairs and security in the Jogorku Kenesh.

In 2025, he was re-elected as a deputy, this time from electoral district No. 8, receiving the highest number of votes.

Akayev is a laureate of the "Golden Pen of Eurasia" award (2011) and the "Kurch Kalem" award from the Melis Eshimkanov Foundation (2014).

He is married and raising three children.

From Journalism to Politics

Janar Akayev first became known to the public as a correspondent for "Azattyk", where he worked from 2007 and gained the most popularity in 2013-2014.

From 2010 to 2012, he was a correspondent in Bishkek and the host of the "Azattyk+" program, and then worked in Prague at "Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty".

Since 2013, he has hosted the television program "Uncomfortable Questions" ("Yngaysyz Suroolor"), where, among other things, he raised the issue of General Prosecutor Aida Salianova spending five hours in a beauty salon during protests in Jalal-Abad.

From February to August 2015, he worked as the press secretary for Almazbek Atambayev.

After that, he decided to run for parliament from the SDPK, receiving Atambayev's support. At that time, he was actively discussed as a candidate for the post of Minister of Labor and Migration, but he preferred to remain a deputy.

Akayev actively defended the interests of his party and often participated in discussions, for example, with Chubak Azhy Jalilov. They later reconciled and held a joint iftar together.

In 2017, a split occurred in the SDPK faction, resulting in Akayev being expelled from the party. He did not resign his deputy mandate, which happened after his statement that 200 customs officers were vacationing in Dubai, as well as his participation in a march for freedom of speech, where he criticized the party's policies.

Akayev also became involved in a number of scandals. One of the most memorable was his photo with Rayimbek Matraimov at a volleyball tournament in 2019, which caused public discontent. He later explained that he found himself in an awkward situation.

The conflict with his mandate involved Sadyr Japarov, who was linked to Orgaltcha, although the deputy denied this. Ultimately, Akayev regained his deputy seat through the courts.

Within the walls of the Jogorku Kenesh, he raised issues of corruption, freedom of speech, and the release of activists and journalists.

Additionally, he initiated a bill on fakes.

Personal Moments

Janar Akayev also faced criticism regarding a private company registered in his name, for which he publicly defended himself, claiming he did not receive any income from it.

In 2021, his family came under the attention of law enforcement agencies. A report of domestic violence was received by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, where his wife accused him of beating her. Later, both denied these accusations through social media.

Some statements by Akayev:

"Speaking in Kyrgyz has become fashionable."

"If you don't want chimkyriks in parliament, be responsible in elections."
