In 2025, the number of domestic violence cases considered in Kyrgyzstan increased by almost 24%. This was reported by Nurgul Bakirova, Deputy Chairperson of the Supreme Court, at the 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York.
She noted that 1,196 such cases were reviewed this year. According to Bakirova, this increase indicates the ongoing relevance of the problem, as well as improvements in the detection of offenses and growing public trust in the judicial system.
The Kyrgyz delegation, led by Deputy Prime Minister Edil Baisalov, is participating in the 70th session of the UN Commission. The forum includes discussions on the implementation of the resolutions of the Fourth World Conference on Women and the special session of the UN General Assembly.
Bakirova also emphasized that access to justice for women and girls is "one of the strategic priorities for sustainable development in Kyrgyzstan." Despite this, many women and girls face various barriers, including economic, geographical, informational, and socio-cultural.
She reminded of the existing laws, such as "On State Guarantees of Equal Rights and Equal Opportunities for Men and Women" and "On Protection from Domestic Violence," as well as the implementation of the National Strategy for Achieving Gender Equality by 2030.
Representatives from 107 countries are participating in the international forum on gender equality. The session will last until March 19, and its main theme is ensuring access to justice for all women and girls.
