At the meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh, the Prosecutor General of the Kyrgyz Republic, Maksat Asanaliev, expressed his position against the introduction of the jury trial institution.

This statement was made in response to a question from Vice-Speaker Meder Aliyev about the possible influence of jury trials on judicial practice.

According to Asanaliev, given the mentality and small population of Kyrgyzstan, jury trials will not be able to ensure an adequate level of objectivity in decision-making.

“I doubt that jury trials can contribute to justice in legal proceedings,” noted the Prosecutor General.

In turn, Meder Aliyev reminded that there is a provision in the Constitution regarding the introduction of jury trials.

“Although the timelines for implementing this project are currently postponed, I still intend to promote this initiative. I believe that for certain categories of crimes, international experience with jury trials could be utilized,” he added.
