Jamilya Dzhamanbaeva, the ombudsman of Kyrgyzstan, issued a statement calling on government authorities to intensify the fight against domestic violence. She noted that the existing measures do not lead to significant improvements, and the issue of violence against women remains pressing.

The statement was prompted by a horrific incident that occurred on October 15, 2025, involving a 28-year-old woman from the village of Boo-Terek in the Bakai-Ata district of the Talas region. According to the victim's mother, her husband returned home in a state of intoxication, started a quarrel, then beat his wife and threatened her with violence.

“He threatened to kill her with an axe, then went outside and returned with a canister of gasoline, dousing his wife with it. While he was looking for matches, she managed to hide her two children in another room, but she couldn't escape herself,” the victim's mother recounted.

When the man ignited the gasoline, the woman ran into the yard and tried to extinguish the flames with water. Passersby who heard her screams came to her aid and took the victim to the hospital. Three days after hospitalization in Talas, she was transferred to Bishkek due to her serious condition. She spent a month in intensive care and then continued treatment in the burn unit of the City Clinical Emergency Hospital until December 18.

According to her mother, the husband's relatives took the woman back to Talas without the consent of her family and deceived the doctors.

They claimed that the injuries were sustained accidentally while igniting a stove with gasoline. The victim herself only recently revealed the truth when her husband came home drunk again and started beating her. At that moment, the woman turned to her mother for help.

Currently, she is in Bishkek with her children and her mother. The victim sustained burns over 60% of her body and requires further treatment and psychological support.

A statement has been filed with the Lenin District Department of Internal Affairs in Bishkek. According to the Talas region prosecutor's office, the case materials have been transferred to the Bakai-Ata District Department of Internal Affairs, and an investigation has been initiated.

The ombudsman's institute is ready to provide the victim with legal and psychological support.

As reported by the Bakai-Ata District Department of Labor, Social Welfare, and Migration, the victim's 32-year-old husband works at the Talas city administration and also sustained minor burns.

The ombudsman of the Kyrgyz Republic urges law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough and swift investigation of this case and hold those responsible accountable to demonstrate that violence against women will not go unpunished.
