The United Nations continues its work towards completing decolonization, noting significant progress over the past decades. In his opening statement at the session of the Special Committee on Decolonization, UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized this topic.

The speech on behalf of Guterres was delivered by his Chief of Staff, Courtenay Rattray, who reminded everyone of the importance of decolonization as one of the organization's core tasks since its inception.

Since 1945, according to the UN News Service, more than a hundred countries have gained their independence, and today more people are realizing their right to self-determination. However, the effects of colonialism still impact modern society through economic inequality, racism, and limited participation of some peoples in international affairs.

The UN emphasizes that the future of these territories should be determined with consideration of their unique needs and within an inclusive dialogue among representatives of these territories, administering powers, and UN member states, in accordance with the UN Charter and the resolutions of the General Assembly. Special attention in the speech was given to youth, whom the Secretary-General considers a driving force for creating a more just and inclusive future.

Climate change was also identified as one of the key challenges. The majority of non-self-governing territories are small islands, which are particularly vulnerable to risks associated with rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and extreme weather events. The UN has called for issues of sustainability and climate change adaptation to be at the center of international discussions.

This day served as a reminder that, despite the progress made, the work towards completing decolonization is still far from over.
