The Chancellor added that Germany is open to discussing new formats of cooperation with the USA aimed at achieving peace not only in the Middle East but also in Ukraine.
Meloni also voiced her position, noting that Italy's participation in the "Council of Peace" in this format violates the country's Constitution. She stated that the council's charter is "incompatible with the legal system" of Italy, which Rome has already informed Washington about. At the same time, the Prime Minister expressed hope for the possibility of resolving contentious issues, after which Italy may reconsider its decision to join.
The DW publication reports that in the "Council of Peace," all decision-making powers are concentrated in the hands of Trump, who will be able to hold the position of council chair for life. His resignation is possible only at his own decision or by unanimous decision of the executive committee, which includes, among others, Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.
The "Council of Peace" is an intergovernmental organization initiated by the President of the United States, aimed at implementing a peace plan for the Gaza Strip and has received a mandate from the UN. According to DW, out of about 60 invited countries, only 26 joined the initiative, and among EU states, Bulgaria and Hungary confirmed their participation.
