Fish farms may begin 'emigration' from Kyrgyzstan

Restrictions on fish feed imports may have serious consequences

In Kyrgyzstan, a ban on the import of fish feed may be introduced, raising serious concerns. This was stated by Renat Dosaev, head of the Association of Fish Farms.

According to him, farmers from all corners of the country regularly reach out for clarification on the situation. Contradictory statements from government bodies create an atmosphere of uncertainty, which in turn undermines trust in the business. Such a situation could provoke an outflow of fish farming enterprises from the country.

Dosaev noted that the choice of feed is an important technological decision for each farm. Farmers select feed based on regional specifics, water quality, stocking density, and other factors. Even the slightest changes in the formulation can negatively affect the health of the fish and the environment, causing mass mortality and reduced productivity.

He added that feed constitutes the main cost item in aquaculture. After the cancellation of VAT on imported feed in December last year, the industry perceived this as a positive sign of stability. However, on February 12, 2026, the tax was reinstated, which, according to fish farmers, will lead to increased production costs and higher prices for fish in the domestic market.

Market experts assert that without access to imported feed, it will be extremely difficult to increase production volumes. A ban on imports will lead to a shortage of feed, rising costs, and reduced profitability of farms, which will negatively impact production volumes and the country's export performance. Domestic feed production cannot meet current demands.

If the situation in Kyrgyzstan worsens, some enterprises may consider relocating their projects to other countries.
