The Ombudsman Jamila Dzhamanbaeva called on state and law enforcement agencies to strengthen joint actions in the fight against domestic violence. She noted that current measures are not yielding noticeable results, and the issue of violence against women and girls continues to be relevant.
This appeal was prompted by a high-profile incident that stirred public outcry on the internet. Reports described how a man doused his wife with gasoline and set her on fire.
At the request of the Ombudsman, employees of the Ombudsman Institute contacted the victim's mother. It was established that the tragedy occurred on October 15, 2025, in the village of Boo-Terek, located in the Bakai-Ata district of the Talas region.
A 28-year-old woman named T.K.M., who had been married for about six years and was raising two daughters, suffered severe violence from her husband. According to her mother, the man returned home drunk, started a scandal, and beat his wife, after which he threatened her, poured gasoline on her, and set her on fire.
As a result of the incident, the woman sustained about 60% burns on her body. She was initially taken to a hospital in Talas, but after three days, due to her serious condition, she was transferred to Bishkek. She spent a month in intensive care and was treated in the burn unit of the City Clinical Emergency Hospital until December 18.
According to the victim's mother, the husband's relatives returned her to Talas without the family's knowledge, deceiving the doctors and passing the incident off as an accident. The woman was only able to tell the truth recently when her husband began to beat her again. After that, she sought help from her mother.
Currently, the woman and her children are in Bishkek. She needs further treatment and psychological support. A statement has been filed with the Lenin District Department of Internal Affairs in Bishkek, and the case materials were subsequently transferred to the Bakai-Ata District Department of Internal Affairs. The Prosecutor's Office of the Talas region has initiated an investigation.
The Akıykatchy Institute expressed its readiness to provide legal and psychological assistance to the victim. Jamila Dzhamanbaeva urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation to hold those responsible accountable under the law, emphasizing that violence against women must not go unpunished.
