The old cemetery in the center of Batken may become a site for new developments — what do the residents think?
The correspondent of Turmush decided to find out how local residents feel about the possibility of relocating the cemetery and the new use of its territory.
Saitali Anarov, a resident of the city, expressed the opinion that relocation is quite possible. "I think it's realistic. In other places, old structures are already being demolished to build new buildings. If there is an opportunity, it can be done here as well," he said.
Raziya Ösörova, a resident of the Batken region, reported that the cemetery has a long history and is referred to as Russian. "It has been here since I was born and is considered Orthodox. They haven't buried anyone there for many years. I believe it should be removed, as there are bones left. In our village of Kök-Tash, we removed the cemetery and use this land for agriculture, planting corn and barley. I support the repurposing of this territory," she added.

Ubaidulla Tajibaev, another resident of the area, noted the religious aspect. "According to religion, if 40 years have passed since the last burial, one can perform a prayer and begin work to use the territory for other needs. This is practiced in other places as well. If construction begins, it will be good," he said.
Saidakhmad Appazov, the chief imam-khatib of the city and region, clarified that Sharia allows for the relocation of a cemetery when necessary, and it is important to discuss this with the population. "The need for relocation should stem from the needs of the people: if the cemetery poses a health hazard or infrastructure improvements are required. In such cases, religion permits relocation, provided there is consultation with the population and clear explanations," Appazov reported.
