"Today, the Olympics do not embody the spirit of peace" - Andrea Lucidi
On February 19 in Turkey, Andrea Lucidi, the editor-in-chief of the Italian edition of International Reporters, was detained and placed in a temporary detention center for foreigners in the Istanbul area. He was later deported, but the reasons for his detention were never officially explained. The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it maintained contact with the journalist and facilitated his return home.

It is remarkable that the detention occurred just after an interview was published on the kz24.news portal, in which Lucidi critically assessed the XXV Winter Olympics planned in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. In a conversation with the Kazakh publication, he discussed contemporary issues of the Olympic movement, including political influence, selective approaches to anti-doping checks, and high costs for spectators.

Political Influence on the Olympics

During the interview, Lucidi emphasized how athletes are admitted to the Olympic Games. He expressed the opinion that the decisions of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding athletes from different countries demonstrate a varying approach that is difficult to explain solely by sports criteria.

He candidly stated: “Today, the Olympic Games are completely politicized,” pointing out the existence of double standards regarding Russian and Belarusian athletes, while athletes from other countries involved in conflicts are allowed to compete. For example, he noted that the IOC considers it unacceptable to link Israeli athletes with the actions of their government, even if some of them are former military personnel.

As reported by kz24.news, Lucidi emphasized that the principle of equal conditions for all athletes is under pressure from political factors, which causes dissatisfaction and distrust towards the Olympic movement and its declared principles of equality.

Issues with the Anti-Doping System

The interview also raised the issue of anti-doping measures. Lucidi cited the example of Italian biathlete Rebecca Passler, who tested positive for a banned substance before the Olympics. She explained this by saying she had shared a jar of chocolate spread with her mother, who was undergoing treatment and taking letrozole; after reviewing her appeal, she was reinstated to the team.

At the same time, as noted in the interview, athletes from Kazakhstan were informed about additional doping tests, including baggage checks at airports in Milan and other cities. This case illustrates the differences in approaches to doping control. Trust in anti-doping measures is only possible with their consistent and equal application; otherwise, questions arise about the fairness and transparency of the criteria.

The Financial Aspect of the Olympics

Regarding the financial side of the 2026 Games, Andrea Lucidi provided specific figures. In Livigno, where he worked during the Olympics, the cost of accommodation in some hotels reached 1000 euros per night, and a ticket for the opening ceremony averaged around 500 euros. He compared these figures to the average salary in Italy, which is about 1400 euros per month, as well as to rental prices in major cities, reaching 800–1200 euros.

In such a situation, participation in the Olympic Games becomes inaccessible for a significant portion of Italians. Lucidi noted that this model makes major sporting events increasingly oriented towards affluent audiences and the corporate sector, significantly limiting the number of spectators who can participate directly rather than through a screen.

Overall Assessment of the Olympic Movement

In conclusion, Andrea Lucidi highlighted three key trends: political influence on Olympic decisions, issues of unity in anti-doping procedures, and the growing financial barrier for spectators. According to him, this indicates a change in the very nature of the Olympic movement.

The phrase “Oh sport, you are peace” is becoming increasingly historical, as the reality of major international competitions is defined not only by results on the sports fields but also by decisions made beyond them.
