Erkimbekov noted that Kyrgyzstan is a secular state.
“Representatives of religious organizations participated in the process of developing unified requirements for school uniforms. The decree does not mention headgear. However, there are clear restrictions regarding skirts for girls,” he added.
When asked whether girls are allowed to wear headscarves in class, Erkimbekov did not provide a clear answer.
According to the aforementioned decree, skirts can be straight, wide, tapered, or made in pleats and folds. The minimum length of a skirt or dress must be 5 centimeters below the knee, while the maximum length is to mid-calf.
Altynbek Erkimbekov also did not clarify the situation regarding whether students who do not meet the appearance requirements can be barred from school.
“If students violate the established norms, the administration of the educational institution has the right to take appropriate measures,” he noted.
Earlier, deputy Dastan Bekeshev expressed the opinion that there is a need to abandon strict dress codes and suits in schools.
In turn, the Ministry of Education emphasized that a traditional style of clothing helps maintain discipline and reduces social differences among students.
For boys, shirts, vests, trousers, and blazers in solid colors—black, gray, dark blue, and burgundy—are provided. Girls are allowed to wear blouses, vests, skirts, trousers, dresses, aprons, and blazers made from solid fabric or in check patterns, with acceptable light shades for shirts.
According to the department, forcing low-income families to purchase uniforms of a specific model is unacceptable—an option of “light top, dark bottom” is possible.
