At the meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh on April 8, Deputy Gulya Kozhokulova raised the issue of nature conservation during the report of the Attorney General, Maksat Asanaliev.
She noted that the president pays special attention to this aspect, actively engaging in the cleaning of Lake Issyk-Kul and visiting natural parks. There are also eco-bloggers, such as Andrey Panaev, and other activists working on environmental issues. However, according to her, the Ministry of Ecology is limited to monitoring, neglecting important issues such as the quality of drinking water and the preservation of Issyk-Kul and mountain lakes, as well as the problem of smog.
Kozhokulova also mentioned that the Ministry of Natural Resources, instead of addressing its tasks, is engaged in seizing property at Issyk-Kul.
She cited the example of the children's camp "Zhalyn," which was taken by the Ministry. "On what grounds? I think this issue should be addressed, and measures should be taken within the framework of the law," she appealed to the Attorney General, inquiring whether the restoration of the environmental protection prosecutor's office is planned.
Asanaliev confirmed the information that such a prosecutor's office previously existed but was abolished for certain reasons.
The Attorney General noted: "You are raising an important issue. I recently discussed this with the president, who supported my initiative and allocated 30 staff positions for the formation of the environmental protection prosecutor's office. We plan to create it in the northern and southern parts of the country, as it was before. The work will focus on four key areas: subsoil use, water resources, the condition of tailings storage facilities, and the legality of protected natural areas."
He added that the establishment of the prosecutor's office should be completed by the end of this week.
