Turmush continues to introduce readers to the residents of Kyrgyzstan who have interesting names. Researchers and tradition keepers believe that the name given at birth can influence a person's fate.

Today, we focus on 30-year-old Edelweiss Jumabay kyzy, who was born in the village of Sary-Tash in the Alaï district and currently resides in the city of Osh.

“I graduated from school in my hometown, then in 2009, I enrolled in the Faculty of International Relations at Osh Technological University. I completed my studies in 2014 and got married. After that, I worked at school No. 47 in the city, but soon went on maternity leave,” she shares.

Edelweiss's father chose her name not by chance: the flower bearing this name grows in the highest mountains, and he hoped that his daughter would grow up to be resilient and patient. Moreover, he wanted to give her a unique name.

“When people hear my name for the first time, they always ask me to repeat it. I understand this, so I pronounce it several times in advance. In our village, there is an elderly grandfather who calls me ‘Edilbay,’ and the children call me ‘Ebedes,’” Edelweiss recounts.
Her friends call her Edya, Ely, or Edelya, but most still refer to her by her full name. “I like my name. I am the only child in the family. My husband is Altynbek, and we have an older daughter, Anzhelika (5 years old), a son, Nurel (3 years old), and a younger daughter, Nurzhan (5 months old),” she adds.

Edelweiss also runs a small online business that she intends to develop. “I dream of traveling with my husband and achieving many goals when the children grow up,” she concluded.

Note:

Edelweiss, or Leontopodium (Latin: Leontopódium), is a genus of herbaceous plants in the Asteraceae family that can be found in alpine and high-altitude regions of Europe and Asia. The name edelweiss comes from the German language (German: Edelweiß) and translates to "noble white" or "pure." The inflorescence of this plant resembles a lion's paw.
