According to the investigation, Kanat, posing as a law enforcement officer, blackmailed Munara, demanding money from her. Her son was in custody in connection with a criminal case that was at the stage of judicial proceedings. The accused threatened the woman, claiming to have connections with high-ranking officials and criminal authorities, and assured her that her son was in danger if she did not hand over $40,000.
In May 2024, Kanat was arrested at the crime scene when he received part of the sum — 150,000 soms. During the search, he voluntarily handed over the money.
- The Oktyabrsky District Court of Bishkek found Kanat guilty under paragraph 4 of part 2 of article 208 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic ("Extortion for the purpose of obtaining property in a large amount"). He was sentenced to three years in a general regime correctional colony, but later probation supervision was applied for a period of one year.
- The Judicial Panel for Criminal Cases of the Bishkek City Court changed the sentence, canceling the probation supervision and taking Kanat into custody in the courtroom. The rest of the sentence remained unchanged.
The Judicial Panel of the Supreme Court ultimately decided to change the sentence of the city panel, stating that the term of punishment would be calculated taking into account the time spent in custody and under house arrest. Otherwise, the sentence remained unchanged, and the cassation appeal of the defense attorney was dismissed.
