According to Fox News, the U.S. State Department has announced a suspension of visa processing for citizens of 75 countries. The document reviewed by the channel states that the suspension applies to "all visas."

The decision will take effect on January 21 and will continue until the visa process at the department is reevaluated.

As noted by Fox News, the reason for this step is the State Department's desire to "combat applicants" who may become a "burden on the state." The list of countries includes Somalia, Russia, Afghanistan, Brazil, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Nigeria, Thailand, Yemen, and others. Information on whether Kyrgyzstan is included in this list is currently unavailable.

The channel also reports that in November 2025, the State Department sent a telegram to consulates worldwide instructing them to apply new approaches to applicant screening. It mentions the so-called public charge provision in U.S. immigration law.

According to this provision, consular officers must deny visas to those who, in their opinion, may attempt to receive social benefits in the U.S. Criteria include health, age, English language proficiency, financial situation, and the need for long-term medical care. However, Fox News does not specify which types of visas are being referred to.

A State Department representative, Tommy Pigott, noted that the department intends to exercise its authority to deny potential immigrants who may become "a burden to the U.S. and take advantage of the generosity of the American people."

"Immigration from these 75 countries will be suspended until the State Department reviews its immigration control procedures to prevent the entry of foreigners who may receive social benefits and government assistance," Fox News quotes Pigott as saying.
