The lucky woman recovered her stolen phone, which had been buried in a London park, indicating a rise in theft cases.

Agiymaa Oyungerel, who lives in London, discovered her Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra buried in Pepys Park. The phone was stolen on Saturday, December 20, by a man on a bicycle near Surrey Quays station. This was reported by MyLondon, a news website covering events in London and operated by Reach plc, the publisher of the Daily Mirror.

Upon retrieving her stolen phone, Agiymaa emphasized that this highlights a growing trend where thieves bury stolen devices in the capital. After the phone was snatched from her hands, the woman did not expect to see it again.

However, 35-year-old Agiymaa was able to track her phone and four other devices hidden under a tree in Pepys Park using Google Find My Device.

This discovery coincided with reports of phone thieves hiding their loot in the ground, waiting for the risk of being caught to diminish. There is a belief that criminals use this method to avoid arrests with stolen phones, waiting for police efforts to track them to ease.

According to community reports, thieves later return for their loot to sell the stolen devices abroad. There is growing concern that Agiymaa's phone theft in the Surrey Quays area may indicate an expansion of this tactic beyond the West End, where it was first noted.

All phones found by Agiymaa buried in the park.
Agiymaa, who works as a journalist and translator, noted: “I don’t understand why the thief made such a stupid mistake. Maybe he lacks experience. I just can’t believe my luck.”

The woman, who came to London from Mongolia to visit her husband, was heading to a second-hand sale when her phone was stolen. She tried to chase the thief, but he quickly rode away on his bicycle.

Immediately after the theft, Agiymaa began a frantic search. Employees at HNT Pawnbrokers informed her that another client had also had their phone stolen in the same manner shortly before.

Two hours later, using Google Find My Device, she rushed to the park. Sifting through leaves and branches, she found her phone among four other devices.

Agiymaa, who is in London to visit her husband, said she no longer feels safe "going out alone."
Agiymaa recounted: “I started digging in the ground and leaves. Suddenly, I stumbled upon something hard and found my phone and four others. All of them were iPhones except mine.”

“I immediately called the police, reported the thefts, and offered them the phones. I drove them to the station myself, but I was afraid I might become a target for thieves.”

“I don’t feel safe since the criminal is still at large, and I don’t want to go out alone.”

Agiymaa expressed hope that the police would fulfill their duties and people would be able to recover their phones.
