A large Indian company will undertake the implementation of the 'Tuu' water complex construction project

According to MiddleAsianNews, the Water Resources Management of Mongolia has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian company Kalpataru Projects International Limited (KPIL) to collaborate on major water infrastructure projects.

As part of this partnership, preparatory work has already begun on the "Tuu Water Supply Dam" project.

In the first phase, a preliminary study was conducted to select the most suitable location for the dam. Specialists assessed geological and topographical characteristics, as well as the volume of potential reservoirs, resulting in the third site being deemed the most appropriate. Detailed surveys and design work will now commence in this area.

At a meeting with stakeholders in January, officials emphasized the importance of accelerating the technical and economic justification of the project and the necessary coordination in the subsequent stages.

This project is being implemented amid growing concerns about water security in Ulaanbaatar. Currently, the capital provides about 200,000 cubic meters of water per day, primarily for domestic needs, while the remainder is used for industry and energy. At present, the city relies solely on groundwater as its only source of water supply.

However, population growth, urban expansion, and industrial development are leading to a constant increase in water demand. Climate change, uneven precipitation, and increasing aridity limit the natural replenishment of groundwater, raising concerns about the long-term sustainability of the system. Dependence on a single source makes the city's water supply system vulnerable.

The Tuu Dam project aims to create a new source of surface water, which will allow for the diversification of water supply.

Preliminary studies indicate that the reservoir will cover an area of 5,569 hectares and have a volume of 50 to 100 million cubic meters. The dam is expected to be 685.15 meters long, 35.8 meters high, and have a sediment depth of 19.84 meters. These parameters are considered sufficient to meet the growing water consumption in Ulaanbaatar.

Upon completion of the project, it is expected to improve the management of surface water use, reduce dependence on groundwater sources, and enhance flood protection. It is also anticipated that it will increase water availability for the industrial and energy sectors, contributing to the creation of a more sustainable and reliable water resource management system for the capital.
