According to the developers, Atlas is designed for round-the-clock use in industry. It is capable of autonomously changing batteries and replacing damaged parts, allowing it to continue working without significant interruptions. In the event of a dangerous proximity to a person, the robot automatically stops, and its design includes "soft" elements, which reduces the likelihood of injury during accidental contact.
One of the main advantages of Atlas is its versatility: there is no need to restructure the working environment. Thanks to its humanoid form, the robot can effectively operate in existing manufacturing facilities, warehouses, and logistics centers alongside people and other machinery, significantly simplifying its implementation.
Atlas can work both autonomously and under the control of an operator via a tablet or VR interface. Control of multiple devices is centralized through the Orbit platform. Training for new tasks takes less than one working day, and skills can be easily transferred to other robots.
The control and training system utilizes Google DeepMind technologies, ensuring a high degree of autonomy and adaptability for the robot. Atlas is designed for prolonged operation in challenging conditions: components can be replaced on-site in just a few minutes, and its casing is protected against dust and moisture.
Technical specifications of Atlas include a height of 1.9 meters, a working radius of 2.3 meters, a maximum payload of up to 30 kg, and an operating temperature range from −20 to +40 degrees. The autonomous operating time is approximately four hours, and battery replacement takes less than three minutes, with charging possible from a standard 110/220 V outlet.
The Hyundai company, which owns Boston Dynamics, has already announced plans to launch mass production, intending to produce hundreds of thousands of robots annually and implement Atlas in its manufacturing facilities. Information about pricing and the start of sales has not yet been disclosed.
