The initiative of the U.S. president is causing controversy
Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has proposed that 58 world leaders participate in a new international forum called the "Council of Peace" on Gaza. This council is intended to promote the implementation of a peace plan and the reconstruction of the sector.
The signing ceremony of the charter is scheduled for January 22 at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Among the invitees are more than 50 countries, including Israel, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, as well as representatives from the European Commission.
The reaction to this initiative has been mixed. The King of Bahrain expressed a desire to participate in the Council, while France declined to take part, citing the possibility of duplicating the functions of the UN and expanding the mandate beyond Gaza. Some countries are currently adopting a wait-and-see approach.
The results of the charter signing in Davos will show whether the Council will become a valid tool for peacefully resolving the conflict or remain merely a political declaration.
