The correspondent of Turmush found out how the medical sector developed in the Issyk-Kul region and when the first hospitals were established.

According to archival data, from 1899 to 1905, the first group of doctors began their activities in the region.

In 1908, a military hospital was opened in the town of Przhevalsk, with 48 beds. It employed one doctor, two paramedics, and one midwife, and was funded by the local budget. The facility consisted of four wards, a reception area, a pharmacy, and a doctor's office.

Doctors worked without days off and accepted patients around the clock. During this period, people were diagnosed with diseases such as smallpox, typhus, malaria, tuberculosis, and other infectious diseases.

According to the decree of the People's Commissariat of Health of the RSFSR dated July 2, 1925, free medical assistance was provided to government employees, their families, union members, military personnel, and disabled workers.

According to the directive of the Executive Committee of the Kyrgyz Autonomous Region dated September 13, 1925, all medical institutions provided services to the population free of charge.

Party organizations and executive committees actively worked to increase the number of medical institutions and improve the quality of services.

In 1926, a hospital with 30 beds was operating in Karakol, with six staff positions. Two doctors worked in the venereal disease dispensary.

The head of the health department was Pyotr Ilyich Smorodin. Since May 1924, this position was held by Ivan Alekseyevich Lazhenitsyn, a graduate of Kazan University.

For many years, the city hospitals employed doctor Voldemar Bekman and gynecologist Maria Yefimovna Khakhalyeva, who were spouses and received numerous state awards over their 30 years in medicine.

Between 1928 and 1929, the Karakol hospital had 60 beds: 22 in the therapeutic department, 38 in the surgical department, and 10 in the maternity department. In 1930, an additional 10 beds were added to the maternity hospital.

In 1928, a hospital with 15 beds was opened in Sazanovka, where one doctor, one paramedic, and one midwife worked.

Also, in the Tyup district, a hospital with 15 beds appeared in a renovated old building. Subsequently, medical institutions were opened in such settlements as Pokrovka, Koltsovka, Cholpon-Ata, Novo-Voznesenovka, and Uytale (according to documents).

According to statistical data, in 1927-1928, 6,852 patients were served in Pokrovka, 10,328 in Koltsovka, 3,331 in Cholpon-Ata, 3,857 in Novo-Voznesenovka, and 1,437 patients in Uytale.

On November 21, 1939, by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, the Issyk-Kul region was established, and at the same time, the regional health department was created.
