The process of normalizing relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia will continue in 2026

The past year has been a period of intensive contacts and practical steps towards normalizing relations for both countries.

Normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia will continue in 2026, as reported by Anadolu Ajansı.

On August 8, 2025, a meeting took place in Washington between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, during which a joint declaration was signed with the assistance of the U.S. President. The foreign ministers of both countries also initialed a peace agreement, confirming their intention to end conflicts and move towards full normalization of relations.

Throughout the year, the parties took several steps to strengthen mutual trust. In particular, Azerbaijan lifted restrictions on cargo transportation to Armenia, which contributed to the improvement of regional trade and transport links. Oil exports from Azerbaijan to Armenia became a key point in the development of their economic relations.

The project "Trump Road for Peace and Prosperity" (TRIPP), also known as the "Zangezur Corridor," stands out in the normalization process. This project will connect the mainland part of Azerbaijan with Nakhchivan and will promote the strengthening of transport and trade links in the region. Construction is expected to begin in 2026 on Armenian territory.

On the political stage, an important step was the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group, which had long been unable to resolve the Karabakh issue. This event indicates that the "Karabakh question" is no longer relevant, and the parties are now striving to resolve emerging issues through bilateral negotiations.

Throughout the year, contacts continued between the parties regarding border demarcation and the opening of transport corridors, and representatives of civil society exchanged visits.

In Armenia, an important moment is the upcoming general elections in 2026.

If after the elections Prime Minister Pashinyan's party returns to power, the issue of initiating a constitutional amendment process may be considered. In this context, it is crucial to initiate a referendum aimed at removing references to territorial claims against Azerbaijan from the Constitution, which would be an important step towards achieving a peace agreement.

In 2026, a transition to a more advanced stage of normalization is expected. The completion of the peace agreement, legal consolidation of borders, and expansion of economic cooperation will be priorities for the near future.

Expanding measures in energy, transport, and trade should help in forming relations between the two countries based on lasting peace.
