Kyrgyzstan sharply reduced the import of seedlings

The Department of Chemicalization, Plant Protection, and Quarantine under the Ministry of Agriculture of the Kyrgyz Republic has introduced strict control over the import of planting material, which is classified as products with a high phytosanitary risk. According to the press service of the department, each seedling crossing the border undergoes a multi-stage inspection: from a detailed analysis of documentation and certificates to mandatory laboratory testing for hidden pests and diseases. In case of detecting threats, strict disinfection measures are applied; in 2025, the volume of fumigation reached a record 156 thousand cubic meters, significantly exceeding previous years.

Statistical data shows significant changes in the market: in 2024, over 13.3 million seedlings were imported into the country, while in 2025 this figure dropped almost by half, amounting to 6.86 million units. Along with the reduction in imports, there is a decrease in export volumes, indicating changes in trade flows. The requirements for the quality of imported products have also tightened: now, in addition to a certificate, an authorization document confirming the right to introduce certain varieties and hybrids into the country is required for import.

The department pays special attention to "chemical safety" in the agricultural sector. A strict ban on the use of unregistered pesticides and agrochemicals has been introduced in the republic. All products that have not undergone state registration are subject to confiscation, and their import is blocked. This strict policy is aimed at creating reliable protection against quarantine organisms that can cause serious harm to the ecosystem and agriculture of the Kyrgyz Republic.
