In Finland, the heat generated during the operation of data centers is actively used for heating residential buildings. The heated water obtained from the cooling of servers is supplied to centralized heating systems and then returned to the data centers in a closed loop.

A successful example of this idea is the Google data center located in Hamina. According to information from the company and local authorities, it provides free heating for about two thousand homes, covering up to 80% of the city's heating needs.

Microsoft is also involved in a similar project, collaborating with energy companies in Espoo. It is expected that by utilizing heat from their data centers, the city will be able to meet up to 40% of its heating needs, which corresponds to approximately one hundred thousand residential homes.

This approach not only reduces carbon dioxide emissions but also decreases dependence on fossil fuels and enhances the overall energy efficiency of urban infrastructure. Finland stands out among countries promoting such innovative solutions due to its well-developed centralized heating systems and harsh climate.
