The Minister of Natural Resources, Meder Mashiev, refuted claims that Bishkek is one of the most polluted cities in the world during a session of the Jogorku Kenesh.

Deputy Suyunbek Omurakzov noted that the capital regularly appears in anti-rankings for air quality. He raised a question about the reliability of this data and what measures are being taken by the authorities to improve the situation.

In response, Minister Mashiev pointed to three key factors contributing to air pollution and reported on the work being done to address them. According to him, active measures are being taken, and results are already visible: according to information from "Kyrgyzhydromet," there has been an improvement in air quality over the past 1-2 years.

“We do not agree that Bishkek is on the list of the most polluted cities in the world; we do not have such indicators. To eliminate doubts on this issue, we are updating the monitoring systems. After the new system is launched, we will be able to rely on this data,” Mashiev added.

He also mentioned that the new monitoring system is expected to be operational by the end of 2026.

The deputy, in turn, highlighted the successful experience of other countries where the smog problem has been reduced by 30% through greening efforts and urged attention to this approach.
