Denmark has become the first country within the European Union to confirm the successful elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis. This is reported by the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to WHO information, from 2021 to 2024, Denmark met all necessary criteria, including low infection rates and high coverage of testing and treatment for pregnant women.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted: “This achievement demonstrates that strong political support and consistent investments in primary health care and comprehensive maternal and child health services enable countries to protect every pregnant woman and newborn from these infections.”

Denmark's success in eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis implies that at least 95% of pregnant women in the country are being tested and treated, while the number of new infections among newborns is less than 50 per 100,000 births annually. WHO also emphasizes that the elimination of HIV and syphilis transmission is the result of years of work by healthcare professionals and the development of the healthcare system. Strengthening data collection systems and laboratory capacities has been of significant importance.

Denmark has now joined the ranks of 20 countries and territories that have previously achieved the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis, or hepatitis B, or have received certificates from WHO confirming their progress in this area. Among them are Armenia, Belarus, and Moldova.

As of the latest data in November 2025, more than 15,000 cases of HIV infection have been registered in Kyrgyzstan. More than 80 new cases are identified in the country each month.

Experts indicate that the main route of HIV transmission in the republic remains sexual—62.7% of cases. The parenteral route accounts for 30%, while the vertical (from mother to child) route is only 2.3%, with the causes in 5% of cases remaining unexplained.
